Evaluation of the NSW Specialist Mental Health Services for Older People (SMHSOP) Community Services Model of Care

NSW Ministry of Health, 2017

In January 2017, the New South Wales (NSW) Ministry of Health released a Guideline documenting the NSW Older People’s Mental Health Community Services Model of Care (NSW Ministry of Health, 2017c). The Guideline is designed to assist older people’s community services to improve service delivery, and it was supported with additional recurrent funding to Local Health District’s (LHD’s) from 2017-18.
Health Policy Analysis designed the evaluation, which involved gathering data from a range of sources:

The interviews and focus groups were recorded and transcribed. Framework analysis was used to organise and analyse the qualitative data. Descriptive statistics were generated from the quantitative data.

HPA documented the extent to which individual LHDs had implemented the model and challenges and barriers with implementation. The model of care was also critically evaluated, and recommendations made on how it might be improved and LHDs better supported in implementing it. Recommendations were also made for LHDs in leveraging local capacities and integrating the model with other older people’s mental health service elements.
