Review of Australian hospital statistics suite of products and timeliness of data

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2011

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) engaged Health Policy Analysis to undertake consultations with key stakeholders to review the Australian hospital statistics suite of products, and to prepare a report on those consultations. Health Policy Analysis:

The report included a comparison of information available through the Australian hospital statistics products and those available from government agencies in Canada, England, New Zealand, and the United States. The recommendations put forward in the report were intended to further enhance the value of these products to users.

The AIHW is progressively implementing the recommendations from this review.

One of the key issues for stakeholders arising from the review was the lack of timeliness of published data. Following this, the AIHW re-engaged Health Policy Analysis to undertake a project to examine options for improving the timeliness of the reporting of data for the Australian hospital statistics suite of products and the MyHospitals web site.

Health Policy Analysis mapped out the processes in the preparation of these products, and proposed alternative processes, including earlier submission of data from states and territory, expedited approval processes and publication of preliminary data until final data become available. The imputation approaches included:

Health Policy Analysis then interviewed stakeholders on the various options put forward. Recommendations included immediate strategies that the AIHW could implement and medium term initiatives to assist in reducing the burden of effort of data supply and associated processes by jurisdictions and the AIHW.
