Project objectives

HPA provided advice and recommendations on the development and implementation of a comprehensive performance framework for acute hospital services for performance reporting in future Australian Health Care Agreements (AHCAs).

Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing

Our approach

The project involved:

  • Review of the state of play in performance reporting under the AHCAs (2003–2008) and developments since their commencement.
  • Review of the literature to identify how different purposes of performance indicators impact on the framework for the indicators adopted and selection of the actual indicators (both Australian and international work was reviewed).
  • Extensive consultation with jurisdictions.

Critical evaluation of the approach to performance monitoring in the AHCAs.

Outcome

The review and consultation processes led to the development of a comprehensive performance framework for reporting under the AHCAs and criteria for assessing and selecting potential indicators.
