Project objectives

The ‘Specialist Paediatric Activity Flag’ is a data item used to identify admitted patient episodes that would most appropriately be managed within specialist paediatric hospitals. The review involved an update to the criteria to reflect newer versions of diagnosis and procedure codes and the AR-DRG classification.

Our approach

The project also included empirical analysis of the performance of alternative criteria that could be used to identify specialist paediatric activity. The aim of exploring alternative criteria was to simplify the algorithm while maintaining or improving the performance of the flag.

Outcome

The review recommended clinically validated criteria that could more accurately and efficiently identify episodes within hospital data that are most appropriately managed in specialist paediatric hospitals
