Project objectives

The Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University partnered with HPA on a report on Denmark’s health system and its recent reforms, particularly in relation to primary care. The aim of the report was to explore innovations for potential application in Australia.

Australian Department of Health

Our approach

HPA reviewed health care reforms in Denmark, focussing on political and administrative structures. Key successes of the Danish healthcare system reforms were examined, with an emphasis on primary care. These reforms were then analysed against the Australian health care system, which included analyses of access, integration, avoidable hospitalisations, funding and regulation. For example, in Denmark, once a patient is registered with a GP, they then have free access to their GP and a range of other services.

Outcome

The study illuminated key differences between the Australian and Danish health care systems with key considerations for future policy decisions.
