Project objectives

The Commission is undertaking an ongoing body of work to support the development and use of patient reported measures of health care quality in Australia.  As part of this work, the Commission is collaborating with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other member countries in the development and international implementation of a set of patient reported measures on chronic disease management in primary care as part of the Patient Reported Indicators Surveys (PaRIS) initiative.

To progress this work, the Commission sought input into the development of a plan or ‘roadmap’ for the possible testing and progressive implementation of the OECD set of patient reported measures in Australia.

Australian Commission on Safety

and Quality in Health Care

Our approach

We delivered a report that provided an initial roadmap for Australia for embedding the OECD patient reported measures into routine clinical practice in primary care. We proposed an iterative three-phase implementation process that included a period of pilot and field testing to explore the feasibility and value of embedding the measures into the routine practice of GPs before moving to full implementation.

As part of the roadmap, we addressed key issues around communication and engagement of key stakeholders, sampling and recruitment methods, requirements for ethics approval and stakeholder consent, data governance and management and evaluation. The roadmap set out the key timelines for testing and implementation of the questions during 2021–23.

Outcome

The Commission will use the report to further inform the implementation of the OECD set of patient reported measures on chronic disease management in primary care in Australia.
