Project objectives

With this work the Commission aimed to understand the availability and use of neonatal and paediatric quality of care metrics both internationally and in Australia, identify existing gaps and emerging trends in the development of indicators, highlight potential indicator sets and/or specific indicators that could be developed and made available for use in Australia, and facilitate use of indicators by hospitals and/or primary care providers in quality improvement programs and learning and sharing activities across peer services.

Australian Commission on Safety

and Quality in Health Care

Our approach

HPA carried out an environment scan and literature review on current local, national and international safety and quality indicators relating to neonatal and paediatric care.

Outcome

The review did not identify indicator sets that could easily be taken up and implemented in Australia but pointed to some promising initiatives that may provide the basis for selecting and developing indicators for Australia. The report suggested the next steps and key actions for the Commission to progress this agenda.
