The objective of the project was to develop service planning guidelines for chemotherapy day units. The purpose of the guidelines was to provide robust planning parameters for planning chemotherapy services and support capital and recurrent investment decisions.
The guidelines were informed by a survey of chemotherapy services to understand current utilisation and data collection, stakeholder consultation, and a literature review of planning parameters for chemotherapy and the impact of technology.
We developed the planning guideline providing a step-by-step approach to estimating capacity required in day units. We also developed a model (software) to accompany the guidelines, allowing health service planners options for data input; using local data where available, and modelling other parameters using data contributed by other sites.
